Metal packaging continues to be an important, and growing, pack type in Asia Pacific, led by metal beverage cans for soft and alcoholic drinks, which accounted for the bulk of new metal packaging sales in the region over 2018-2023. While metal bottles have been enjoying a boom in the Chinese beer market, metal food cans remain the next-biggest pack type, still widely employed in a number of shelf stable food categories.

Metal beverage cans dominate metal packaging

Metal beverage cans, widely used for alcoholic drinks and soft drinks, make up the bulk of metal packaging in Asia Pacific. Other types of metal beverage packaging remain relatively small, with metal food cans, still widely used in packaged food and dog and cat food, having much lower sales than metal beverage cans.

Dynamic growth for metal bottles in Chinese lager

Metal bottles, increasingly adopted by brands such as Snow, Tsingtao or Budweiser, have been enjoying very dynamic growth in beer packaging in China in recent years. Metal bottles offer the same environmental benefits as metal beverage cans of being lightweight and infinitely recyclable, while also providing the familiar experience of drinking from a bottle. Their distinctive appearance can also make them particularly eye-catching on store shelves.

Metal food cans still popular in food packaging

Although competing pack types continue to gain favour with their lightweight and flexible characteristics, metal food cans remain a packaging staple in many shelf stable food categories with their good long-term preservation qualities. They are also highly resilient and can withstand the rigours of transportation and storage, reducing the risk of damage and spoilage, as well as offering recyclability to fit in well with the increasing focus on sustainability.
