Retail current value growth was higher than retail volume growth in topical and adult systemic analgesics during 2024, with inflation exerting upward pressure on prices affecting the performance, such as for patches and gel/creams. All types of analgesics are projected to see positive retail volume and value (constant 2024 prices) growth over the forecast period.
Given the very low availability of generics in Greece, consumers are set to remain very brand loyal when it comes to analgesics. Despite price increases for the leading brands and under pressure disposable incomes, in the short term at least, consumers are unlikely to trade down to generics.
While for mild pain relief consumers opt for OTC products, there is a large consumer base that prefers stronger pain killers that do not have an OTC status. Consumers are trying to be more conscious in their consumption of analgesics, and this may result in their avoiding taking pain killers for mild occasions.
