In 2023, the inflation rate in Bangladesh is very high, causing a significant increase in essential commodity prices over the past year. Despite this, tobacco sales have improved, primarily due to the widespread availability of single-stick sales, which remain prevalent despite official bans.
In 2023, tobacco prices in Bangladesh have increased, yet sales also rose compared to 2022, despite the rising cost of living. The industry remains highly uncontrolled regarding pricing and policy implementation.
In Bangladesh, smoking is regarded as a bad habit and younger consumers of legal-smoking age do not tend to smoke in front of older people. The majority of Bangladeshis are Muslim, and many consider the use of tobacco to be makrooh (a disliked or offensive act) under Islamic law.
Although Bangladesh is one of the largest consumers of tobacco in the world, the country’s domestic tobacco industry accounts for a small proportion of total tobacco leaf produced (considered to be about 1%). Domestic manufacturers include Akij Group, which was acquired by Japan Tobacco Inc in 2018 and which produces Akij Biri; Abul Khair Leaf Tobacco which produces lower-band Marise and Super Kings White; Alpha Tobacco Company with brands such as Boss, Brigade, Caesar, Purbani, Ranger, Senor Gold, and The President; Nasir Gold Tobacco Company which is known for its Nasir Gold and Nasir Biri brands, and Sonali Tobacco which is known for its Sunmun brand.
During the review period, BATB increased its investment in its factory and production facilities. Meanwhile, JTI Managing Director Neil Cupland expressed interest in developing investment, technology, manpower and products and intends for the company to continue doing business in Bangladesh in the next 50 years, indicating opportunities for business growth.
