Surging demand for e-vapour products was the main trend in tobacco in Iraq during 2023, as demand for cigarettes and smoking tobacco falls. Notably, new consumers, including women and young adults, tend to find vaping preferable to smoking.
During 2023, the Iraqi Government implemented a 10% increase in the value of the local currency, which had the effect of consumer bolstering purchasing power and curbing inflation. However, despite high inflation, intense price competition among major players within the tobacco industry led to decreases in unit prices across all categories of tobacco.
Smoking remains deeply ingrained within Iraqi society and, as a result, the country’s population has taken enthusiastically to vaping. Notably, the demographic trends show a bias towards younger people making use of e-vapour products, with a notable increase in female tobacco users in urban areas as a result.
Recent years have seen an unavoidable transformation in the demographic landscape of tobacco consumption in Iraq as more women have taken up smoking and vaping, while younger consumers generally prefer vaping to smoking cigarettes. While women in Iraq tend not to be particularly heavy smokers, increasing numbers of local women exhibit a propensity towards regular vaping, often indulging in the use of e-vapour products in private settings where they feel more comfortable.
The high levels of price competition that have emerged in Iraq’s tobacco industry over the past 12 months have motivated a significant shift in the prevailing market dynamics. The more traditional passive approach has given way to a set of more proactive strategies.
