While Lebanon has faced a severe economic crisis and the negative impact of the Israel-Hamas War, dairy has remained resilient due to its established place in the local diet and status as key to Lebanon’s agriculture sector. Although dairy remains part of the daily diet of almost all Lebanese people, the frequency of consumption has fallen as incomes have dropped.
Dairy products are considered a necessity in many households in Lebanon, whether milk, labneh or cheese, which are key sources of basic nutrition even in poor households. This makes the dairy products and alternatives market relatively resilient even in times of economic difficulty, as experienced during the review period.
The Lebanese are generally very enthusiastic consumers of a wide range of dairy products and dairy consumption is part of everyday life for the majority of the country’s population. As such, per capita sales of cheese, labneh, laban and milk are high and all of these products form a key part of the everyday diets of a high proportion of the Lebanese’s population.
Despite everything that has impacted the market in recent years, the Fransabank retailing index showed a recovery in some categories in the first three quarters of 2023. That said, the fourth quarter of 2023 again showed significant declines due to the onset of the Israel/Hamas War and its impact on South Lebanon.
While Lebanon’s private sector recovered somewhat over 2023, the public sector is still bankrupt and only getting much worse. Lebanon’s deeply rooted infrastructure issues have therefore further exacerbated with the continuation of the economic crisis.
The current situation in Lebanon is precarious and worrying, with many concerned about the potential impact of the Israel-Hamas War. All foreign citizens living in Lebanon were called upon to leave the country by their embassies due to the threat of the war expanding.
