The seasonally variable climate pattern known as El Niño has had a severe impact on South African weather, creating record-high temperatures and severe drought, particularly in the Western Cape, which resulted in a “Day Zero” drought in 2018 where the province was predicting the day the dams run totally dry. South African forecasters are warning that the country can again be heading for droughts as the El Niño is replaced by La Niña.
In August 2023, it was announced that South Africa had signed an export deal whereby domestic production of avocados are exported to China. According to the South African Avocado Growers Association (SAAGA), the country, which currently exports approximately 45% of its total production to Europe, has the opportunity to further expand the planting of avocados to meet the increased export demand.
