The staple foods market in Ghana continued to be significantly impacted by inflation in 2024. Prices rose across product categories with an increasing proportion of consumers’ disposable incomes being required for staple foods, while the broader increase in the cost of living placed further significant constraints on consumer spending.
The increase in food prices in Ghana is rooted in the fundamental challenges within the agricultural sector in the country. Numerous structural obstacles hinder the productivity and expansion of the agricultural sector.
In terms of essential food products, Ghana's indigenous cuisine is diverse and typical dishes vary from region to region. However, the basic ingredients and staple foods are the same throughout the country and notably include rice, yam, corn, cassava, plantain and maize.
Many consumers shifted towards more affordable brands towards the end of the review period as prices of staple foods continued to increase fast, without corresponding increases in wages and salaries.
More consumers have shifted away from modern grocery retailing to open markets to shop for staple foods. Even for many middle- and upper-income consumers, who find shopping in modern grocery channels more convenient, the open market has become more appealing.
Population growth and ongoing urbanisation will support growth in staple foods in Ghana over the forecast period. The fast pace of urban living will lead to a growing demand for products offering greater convenience, including foods that require minimal preparation and those that have a long shelf life to reduce the need to shop so frequently.
