Lebanon remains embroiled in an economic crisis with elevated inflation and a weak local currency negatively impacting consumer purchasing power, while local businesses have seen their margins squeezed..
Lebanon has been in a state of turmoil since 2019, including the country’s economic and financial collapse, an ongoing presidential vacuum and political instability, and more recently the spillover effect from the Israel-Hamas war in the south of Lebanon. Despite this, sales of staple foods continued to see positive growth in retail volume terms in 2023 and 2024.
Staple foods categories like baked goods, rice and pasta are important in everyday life and remained in strong demand in 2024. However, all categories are experiencing some form of diversification, such as a growing focus on local products and consumers trading down to lower priced options as they looked to make savings.
Despite everything that has impacted the market in recent years most categories of staple foods still registered growth in retail volume terms in 2024. That being said, many grocery retailers in the south of Lebanon reported a drop in economic activity due to the spillover effect from the Israel-Hezbollah conflict.
While Lebanon’s private sector has recovered somewhat, the public sector is still bankrupt and the situation is getting much worse.
The future of staple foods to some extent depends on how well Lebanon copes with the ongoing economic and structural challenges within the country. Should the economy stabilise further with increased dollarisation of the economy then it is possible that some consumer groups will start to consume more products.
