Myanmar's post-coup economic crisis deepened in 2024 with prices of staple foods rising steeply due to a fall in Myanmar’s currency, product shortages and government mismanagement. In an effort to control prices, the military government introduced subsidies on rice, while cracking down on businesses, which led to even higher prices and greater volatility.
Despite a contraction across many staple food categories including rice pasta and noodles, processed meat and seafood, and processed fruit and vegetables, overall retail volume sales of staple foods experienced mild growth in 2024. Much of this was driven by habitual consumption of core categories, such as baked goods, retail channel expansion and product innovation.
Myanmar’s GDP growth is expected at 1.2% in 2024 and rise to 2.
Over half of Myanmar’s population of 54.5 million live below the poverty line, with 53% of people living below the international poverty line of USD3.
In the wake of the February 2021 military coup, the civil unrest that swept through Myanmar’s society resulted in disruptions to logistics systems and supply chains, which presented challenges to companies involved in the distribution of staple foods. In addition, numerous incidents interfered with the ability of manufacturers to maintain consistent operations, leading to decreased production volumes and transportation delays across all categories of staple foods.
Staple food prices including rice, processed meat and seafood and processed fruits and vegetables are expected to continue increasing over the forecast period, which will negatively impact the purchasing power of many households. Myanmar is expected to remain politically fractured and economically fragile over the forecast period, with these factors having a longer-term influence and negative consequences on staple food prices.
