In 2024, staple foods in Uganda has witnessed growth due to the rising population and urbanisation. However, there is a continued focus on affordability.
In 2024, Uganda has seen price increases across various food categories, due to increases in the prices of essential inputs such as fuel, wheat flour, and cooking oil. Imported products, in particular, have seen a steep hike.
Consumers in Uganda typically consume three main meals a day – breakfast, lunch, and supper. However, snacking is becoming more common, with this linked to rising disposable incomes and busier lifestyles, particularly in urban areas.
Uganda has a very young population, with a median age of just 18 in 2024, with consumers aged 0-14 years accounting for 44% of the total population. This demographic make-up benefits sales of packaged food, with schoolchildren and young adults often enthusiastic about such products.
Packaged food distribution remains considerably stronger in urban areas, with many staple foods therefore having little rural distribution presence. This is not chiefly due to transportation challenges, but instead reflects a lack of demand for many products amongst rural consumers.
In the forecast period, it is expected that higher inflation will persist, at least in the short term, and inflationary pressures are expected to impact household budgets and spending on food. Nevertheless, rapid growth in the number of households and urbanisation are factors which should help drive dynamic growth for staple foods over the forecast period.
