A World Health Organization study in 2023 has concluded that it is safe for parents to give their children cow’s milk starting from six months of age, rather than the previously recommended 12 months. This change to the guidelines could impact how parents decide to feed their children, as cow’s milk can be a cheaper alternative to milk formula.
The growth of plant-based substitutes in milk formula is developing at a slower pace than other dairy categories such as drinking milk products, although this does not mean that there is lack of potential for expansion over the forecast period. An initial barrier to using plant-based milk is uncertainty around whether it is suitable for an infant’s development to rely only on plant-based milk formula rather than variants based on cow’s milk.
Baby food is starting to feel the impact of a declining birth rate, not just in New Zealand, but in many developed markets. Based on the current trends of consumers, the birth rate can be expected to fall further over the forecast period, hindering stronger demand for any type of baby food, including milk formula.
