The two most popular fish in France remain salmon and cod, despite the fact these fish tend to be imported and are not locally caught in the waters around the country. Tuna and shrimp are also popular and not produced locally.
Fresh seafood will, however, continue to face significant competition from shelf stable fish, such as canned tuna, sardines, and mackerel, which have seen success in 2022 and 2023 as one of the cheapest and most convenient sources of protein. Manufacturers have been innovating in these products as demand has grown, and fresh fish is struggling to compete against these value-for-money seafood products.
