Despite being amongst the 15 countries with the highest levels of fish and seafood production, Mexico still sees lower than average consumption of these types of products. Many consumers are deterred by the difficulties involved in cooking these products at home, considering that many of them demand a lot of cleaning and preparation prior to cooking, while they also have a short life span even when kept in the fridge, given that they are mainly sold in unpackaged/unsealed formats.
Local shrimp producers have been hit hard by the intensification of international competition, as Mexico’s production capacity has been decreasing and the government is expected to continue to rely on imports to meet existing demand, facilitating the development of imported products through low taxes. Local producers are expected to decrease the number of boats in the sea, given the high costs involved and the tougher competition they are facing.
