Alcoholic drinks in Pakistan achieved positive value and volume sales in 2023, in both off-trade and on-trade terms. However, there are various religious and cultural restrictions around alcohol in general in Pakistan, with only beer and spirits significant enough to show in the data.
It is important to note that Pakistan's alcoholic beverage market is relatively small and highly targeted. The number of players is limited by strict regulations and cultural factors which, overall, limit the availability and consumption of alcohol in the country – especially in Muslim-majority populations.
Murree Brewery is the oldest brewery in South Asia, with its shares being listed on the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX). The company is still the largest manufacturer of alcoholic drinks in Pakistan, with limited competition from local manufacturers such as Quetta Brewery, and Hui Coastal Brewery and Distillery Limited, alongside international players such as Carlsberg A/S, Grolsch Koninklijke NV, and the like.
Due to religious and cultural reasons, Pakistan has strict regulations on the sale and consumption of alcoholic beverages. Alcohol is not easily available in most parts of the country.
In Pakistan, most alcohol consumption tends to take place in private settings and through non-trade channels, as there are only a limited number of eateries which serve alcohol. High-end fine-dining restaurants and gymkhana clubs/social clubs are often located in designated areas where alcohol consumption is permitted with specific regulations.
Trends over the forecast period will continue to be influenced by key factors pertaining to how alcohol is consumed in Pakistan. Many government-to-government (G2G) bilateral agreements have been signed, with foreign direct investment (FDI) by private companies being made in the past few years.
