Cooking ingredients and meals in Uganda saw further strong price increases across packaged food in 2024, with food inflation hitting double-digits. This made consumers prioritise spend on essentials like edible oils, while limiting their consumption of non-essential products.
Urbanisation and strong urban retailing development, particularly the opening of new supermarkets and hypermarkets, improved access to packaged food. In turn, this widened awareness of many brands and products among urban consumers.
Uganda has a very young population, with the median age reaching 18-years-old in 2024. Similarly, 0-14-year-olds accounted for 44% of the total population at the end of the review period.
While still underdeveloped, the improvements to the road network in the country allow better the distribution of cooking ingredients and meals. Infrastructure development is set to enable suppliers move deeper into previously remote or unreachable areas, including the islands along Lake Victoria.
