Consumer health is benefiting from rising investment in Myanmar. Local pharmaceutical companies are investing in manufacturing essential OTC products, as retail prices of imported products have further increased due to the weakening of the local currency.
Prices of both imported drugs and traditional medicine products have continued to rise in 2024 with stock shortages from time to time because of import restrictions and border trade disruptions amidst conflicts. Approximately 70% of drugs available in the market (including OTC brands) are imported from abroad, and the retail pricing units of drugs have increased due to the rising USD prices.
Myanmar’s GDP growth is expected to be 1.2% in 2024 and 2.
Poverty remains an issue in Myanmar, with 32% of the population living below USD2.15 per day.
Conflicts between the military forces and revolutionary forces intensified in 2024 including at and near border trade zones, significantly disrupting the country’s trade with China, Thailand, India, and Bangladesh. This is negatively impacting the availability of drugs and resulting in drug shortages, especially amongst well-known brands as supply has not been able to keep up with demand during border trade disruptions.
Medicines are registered under one of four drug schedules in Myanmar: OTC, Prescription Only, Limited Controlled and Highly Controlled. OTC schedules are provided to all pharmacies and health and personal care stores, although most of these retail outlets also sell a wide range of unregistered products.
Vitamins and dietary supplements should also be registered with the FDA. However, in practice a wide range of unregistered products are available in the country as a result of the expensive and time-consuming process of FDA registration.
The forecast period is likely to see a further increase in self-medication amidst rising hospital costs, expanding retail channel distribution with growth in health and personal care stores, pharmacies and e-commerce, and the ongoing rise in preventative healthcare. All these factors that are expected to contribute to growth in consumer health in Myanmar over the forecast period.
