Although overall demand for footwear in Australia is predicted to continue to rise over the forecast period, albeit slowly, the category is expected to record a marginal decline in value terms (at constant 2024 prices). This is because many local consumers are likely to remain frugal and reassess their footwear purchasing decisions.
Retailers are likely to continue to experiment with ways to reignite sales over the forecast period, with offline distribution channels being a likely ground for increased competition. Brands are likely to expand their physical presence via their own outlets in the coming years, as a means to encourage additional touchpoints with consumers and to ensure that a brand dialogue remains top of mind.
Among the upper tiers of Australian footwear, sustainability is likely to continue to manifest through shoe design and craftsmanship associated with quality, longevity and brand recognition. These factors are particularly important for consumers favouring sustainability messaging and/or with the means to be able to access more premium and luxury apparel offerings.
