As podiatry becomes increasingly important in footwear design, consumers are evolving their understanding and demands when buying footwear. This trend is most prevalent among the elderly, and it will drive product development and innovation among local companies who are positioned as footwear specialists for Taiwanese people.
The expansion of shopping outlets is likely as part of the government’s ‘Grand South Plan’ to narrow the gap between the north and the south. A boom in retail outlets and malls is expected in southern and central Taiwan over the forecast period, which will become a hotly contested landscape for footwear retailers.
There will be a growing emphasis on sustainability in the footwear landscape over the forecast period, such as sneakers made from 100% recyclable polyester. Multi-national footwear brands such as Nike, adidas, Asics and Crocs have asked the supply chain to stop using virgin plastic, and have introduced recycled plastic, as part of sustainability goals to use recycled materials and embrace the circular economy.
