Demand for footwear is expected to remain relatively stable throughout the forecast period, with more dynamic growth being hampered by a high degree of maturity within the category and intense discounting activity – since footwear is purchased less frequently than apparel, it is more likely to be discounted. On the other hand, the ongoing outdoor and performance trends, keen interest in sustainably produced footwear and a gradual shift from quantity to quality will continue to add value to the category over the forecast period.
Although in-store retailing saw a post-pandemic resurgence in popularity, manufacturers will continue to invest in e-commerce and online channels over the forecast period by, for example, introducing technological solutions to simplify the returns process. This is because footwear purchased online often has to be returned as it is the wrong size and fit.
The value drivers for footwear over the forecast period will remain largely unchanged. Collaborations between sportswear and luxury fashion brands are expected to continue, building on successful partnerships that have already been established, such as adidas/Gucci and Nike/Louis Vuitton.
