The robust growth in off-trade and on-trade value sales during 2022 and 2023 has been driven by widespread inflation since the COVID-19 pandemic. As movement and travel restrictions were lifted, domestic demand surged, resulting in disruptions to both international and domestic supply chains.
The cost-of-living crisis in Australia has led to decreased purchasing power for consumers, as a result of which shoppers have to prioritise where to spend their money. Despite water being considered a non-discretionary expense, consumers facing economic challenges will readily substitute bottled water for tap water at home.
Sustainability remains pivotal in branding strategies for bottled water, especially considering the challenges faced by still bottled water brands in terms of innovation, and the ease of substitution provided by cheaper alternatives such as tap water. Alongside the heightened environmental concerns of local consumers, the escalating demand and costs associated with certain packaging materials, notably rPET, are prompting several players to explore alternative materials and pack sizes in an attempt to target varied consumption occasions.

Bottled Water
This category is the aggregation of still bottled water (spring, mineral & purified), carbonated bottled water (spring, mineral & purified), flavoured bottled water and functional bottled water. Bulk bottled water is split out separately. It is defined as packaged drinking water – purified, spring or mineral – that is packaged in a container of 8 litres or larger. The bulk bottled water data types apply to Still Bottled Water and Carbonated Bottled Water but do not apply to functional or flavoured bottled water. Bulk water is classified according to the new Bulk retail volume and Bulk retail value data type regardless of channel of sale: bulk water sold via retail locations and bulk water delivered direct to a consumer’s home is included. Bulk water sold to institutions (offices, schools etc.) remains excluded.
