The trend towards percevied healthier snacks, including fresh products, is expected to continue impacting vending, with machines likely to give greater prominence to cereal bars and nuts, seeds and trail mixes over sugar confectionery. Although expected to remain a niche within vending overall, operators may increase the availability of vending machines adapted to offer fresh food, despite their higher operating costs.
Vending is expected to diversify to include a wider range of non-food products to target impulse and on-the-go demand, including portable consumer electronics such as headphones and mobile phone charging accessories. Vending may also be increasingly used as a promotional tool to engage audiences at high traffic locations; for instance, Ikea has tested pop-up vending machines selling accessories to help consumers sleep whilst travelling.
A broader adoption of contactless payments may help vending players to reduce costs and make their operations more profitable, notably by enabling them to compete more directly with convenience stores through a wider offer.
