Vending overall is expected to return to a flat value performance over the forecast period, with a consistent positive performance seen in foods vending, followed by soft drinks vending. Therefore, the expected success in these areas will help to rebalance vending overall after the negative impact created by the tobacco laws.
Tobacco vending sees an uncertain future ahead, due to the new tobacco laws and an overall decline in tobacco consumption, in line with Portugal’s overall incentives towards smoking cessation. This will include public awareness campaigns, strict public policies like smoking bans in public spaces, and the potential of increased taxes on tobacco products.
Technology will drive future innovation in vending over the coming years, as vending machines integrate more advanced digitalisation and smart technologies, following global technological trends and changes in consumer preferences. Examples include the growing integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and machine learning, voice recognition technology, or increasingly immersive experiences with Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR).
