Vending is set to see further value growth in South Africa over the forecast period. The vending landscape is likely to benefit from a more diverse offer, as the pressures of restrictive tobacco regulations encourage operators to look to tap into interest in niche products.
The move away from tobacco products and alternatives is likely to provide room for the expansion of emerging areas such as smart fridge vending machines, which are unconstrained by packaging limitations and devoid of the risk of product jams. On the other hand, the government's decision to use vending machines to dispense health care products will also encourage the private sector to tap into emerging segments such as consumer health to boost margins.
As demand rises in underpenetrated areas, innovation in vending products will likely continue to be dominated by wellness offerings such as over-the-counter medicine and personal care products. Likewise, the momentum gained by reverse vending machines over the review period will continue increasing, supported by awareness of the environmental impact of wastage in South Africa.
