In 2022, packaging in Canada was consumer-centric, with their lifestyles and demands shaping the packaging industry. Sustainability was the key concern driving packaging innovation in Canada in 2022.
2022 was the first year completely free from pandemic-induced restrictions on travel and mobility in Canada since the COVID-19 virus arrived in the country in 2020. Although hybrid work modes persisted in Canada, consumers began to leave their homes more frequently and resumed their busy lives.
Within the majority of the various packaged food categories, sustainability concerns appear to be driving changes in brands’ packaging decisions. In dairy, for example, board tubs are seeing dynamic growth for the packaging of cheese, which has traditionally been packaged in flexible plastic, as these paperboard tubs are considered better for the environment.
PET bottles continued to lead the packaging of soft drinks in terms of unit volume sales and continued to gain share over other popular pack types such as metal beverage cans and glass bottles in Canada in 2022. This is despite the broader shift within the industry towards sustainable pack types as leading brands seek to boost their sustainability credentials.
In the first year completely free from pandemic-induced restrictions on travel and mobility, foodservice sales of alcoholic drinks continued to recover in 2022, albeit remaining below pre-pandemic levels. At the same time, retail volume sales declined, resulting in only marginal growth in the overall alcoholic drinks packaging market in Canada.
In order to set themselves apart in Canada’s competitive beauty and personal care market, brands have taken to innovating their packaging designs, either with new, unique looks or with multiple functions and product combinations. Within cosmetics in particular, multifunctional packaging is gaining ground as brands combine different products – such as mirrors, applicators and additional compartments – into compact packages, making them more convenient and aesthetically pleasing for consumers.
Packaging unit volumes in home care in Canada continued to decline in 2022 as the industry experienced normalisation following the pandemic, when hygiene concerns and fear of viral transmission elevated demand for disinfectant products. HDPE bottles remained the leading pack type in home care, preferred in important categories such as laundry and surface care for the high level of chemical resistance these bottles offer.
