In Indonesia, health and wellness trends significantly impacted confectionery packaging choices, with consumers seeking smaller pack sizes as well as eco-friendly options. While flexible plastic remained a popular packaging material in frozen ready meals, folding cartons were gaining share in this category due to their sustainability and aesthetic appeal.
In Indonesia, flexible plastic is the preferred packaging for meals and soups because it is lightweight, durable and cost-effective, reducing transport costs and carbon footprint, while fitting well with the country’s logistical needs. It provides ample branding space and supports various portion sizes, while also being heat-sealable for convenience.
Yoghurt consumption has been seeing strong growth in Indonesia both during and in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, as consumers became more health-conscious and aware of the benefits of dairy products rich in probiotics and calcium. This trend bolstered the popularity of yoghurt, with other plastic bottles the dominant pack type, although they have recently been losing some share to other formats, including HDPE bottles or thin wall plastic containers.
As part of Indonesia’s push towards a circular economy and its goal to become net zero waste by 2050, Coca-Cola ran its “Recycle Me” campaign for a third year in 2023. Collaborating with partners like Grab, Waste4Change and Mahija Parahita Nusantara Foundation, the initiative offers incentives for consumers to recycle PET bottles.
In Indonesia, glass bottles remained the preferred pack type for both stout and spirits in terms of total packaging retail unit volumes in 2023, due to their premium image, and ability to preserve the quality of the product. Brands such as Guinness and Bintang continue to offer stout in glass bottles because this pack type enhances the consumption experience by maintaining the beverage’s flavour and carbonation.
Other plastic jars are the preferred packaging type for styling agents in Indonesia as consumers value their practicality. Unlike glass, plastic jars are lightweight, resistant to breakage and convenient for frequent use, especially for products like hair gels and pomades.
In Indonesia’s home care market, plastic pouches are the most popular pack type for floor cleaners, having long since overtaken flexible plastic as the leading packaging format in this category. Pouches offer a sustainable and cost-effective packaging solution, ideal for refillable products.
