Chewing gum in France remains dominated by the large multinationals Perfetti Van Melle and Wrigley, although smaller companies such as One Gum are helping to bring some innovation to the category. In 2022 Mondelez sold its chewing gum business, which includes the leading brand Hollywood, to rival Perfetti Van Melle.
From January 2024, government legislation came into force requiring chewing gum manufacturers to finance, organise and implement recycling solutions which are appropriate to their products. What this has meant in reality is that this extended producer responsibility (REP) legislation is requiring manufacturers to contribute financially to the collection and recycling of chewing gum waste.
Functional gum (eg energy gum) and new flavours, alongside new formats and packaging will likely remain the main source of innovation in gum over the forecast period. With many consumers considering chewing gum to be unhealthy, some manufacturers are trying to change the narrative around their products and they are positioning them as beneficial for mental wellbeing, as a stress reliever, or to help stay focused.
