Two Israeli companies, BioMilk and Remilk, are developing technology to produce milk from milk cells in laboratories without the use of cows. With no need to use animals directly in the production of the milk, these products are set to provide a solution for many consumers who avoid drinking milk for reasons of animal welfare, as well as the environmental impact of livestock farming.
Concerns about the high levels of constituents such as salt/sodium, sugar and fat in food and drink were reinforced by the introduction of new red labels on food packaging by the Ministry of Health in 2020. However, in 2023, the Prime Minister stated that the health labels of green and red on food packaging do not have a sufficient effect and are too expensive to be continued with.
