All players in beauty and personal care in Lebanon continued to face huge challenges during 2023 as the Israel-Hamas war piled further pressure on demand at a time when many consumers have already curbed their spending on non-essential items. Thus, categories that are seen as essential fared well, while those which are seen as optional luxuries continue to struggle.
Throughout 2023, Lebanese society remained under the influence of the deep and seemingly intractable economic crisis that has been in effect since late 2019. The first half of 2024 meanwhile has seen an escalation of conflict in neighbouring Israel, due to the Israel-Hamas war.
Beauty and personal care remains an important fmcg industry in Lebanon and a key point of focus for many people living in the country, which used to be seen as the fashion capital of the Middle East region, In particular, Beirut has long been seen as a hub for nightlife, arts and culture in the Arab world. This is strongly reflected in strong consumer interest in categories such as colour cosmetics and fragrances and, increasingly, men’s grooming and skin care as well.
While an uptick in consumer spending was seen over the course of 2023 as some confidence returned to Lebanon’s beleaguered consumer economy, the ongoing devaluation of the Lebanese pounds remains a major cause for concern. As of February 2023, the official LBP/USD exchange was adjusted from LBP1,500 to LBP15,000 per USD1.
Lebanon’s infrastructure issues are deeply rooted; however, the situation has deteriorated substantially since the onset of the socioeconomic crisis. While Lebanon’s private sector has recovered somewhat from the ravages of the ongoing crisis, the country’s entire public sector remains under huge pressure due to a chronic lack of funding.
Beauty and personal care is slated for a moderate positive performance over the forecast period, with sales set to continue rebounding after substantial sales declines were seen as the country’s economy faltered earlier in the review period. However, the Israel-Hamas war has the potential to undermine growth rates, with the questionable security situation likely to result in fewer people wanting to visit Lebanon.
