Tourism in Argentina can vary greatly from year to year based on the value of the peso against the dollar. When the exchange rate is very low, Argentina becomes a very affordable destination for international tourism, a situation primarily taken advantage of by those from neighbouring countries such as Brazil, Uruguay and Chile.
In the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, several airlines that had left Argentina returned, offering previous frequencies or, in some cases, increasing them. Amongst the airlines that returned to Argentina are Qatar Airways and Boliviana de Aviación, while Gol Lineas Aereas and Air Europa increased flight frequencies.
Although there is enough demand and affordable real estate to expand hotel offerings, especially premium and luxury establishments, ongoing political and economic instability in Argentina deters investment to some extent.
Tickets and lodging are becoming less profitable for intermediaries since both airlines and hotels focus on developing the direct channel, leaving intermediaries with fewer commissions on the sale of these products. For this reason, intermediaries are increasingly promoting customised trips tailored to customers' requests, creating more personalised packages whose focus lies more on the service than on the price.
The country's economic situation and the strength of the dollar will impact travel in Argentina across the forecast period, and devaluation of the local currency could attract international tourists. Currently, it is very affordable for Argentinians to travel to other countries; however, the domestic economy is facing challenges due to an increase in the cost of products and services, particularly since there has not been a concomitant increase in the average salary.
