The dynamic performances recorded across all categories of travel and tourism in Romania during 2023 represented the continuation of the strong recovery that began in 2021 and developed over the course of 2022. This was mainly result of the elimination of COVID-19 restrictions and the complete opening up of domestic and international travel routes.
The increasing appetite for outbound travel among the Romanian population was a major reason for the high growth seen in the numbers of passengers travelling on the country’s airlines during 2023. Value growth in the category was even higher, the result of significant increases in ticket prices in response to rising jet fuel prices, among other rising operational costs.
Hotels recorded another dynamic sales performance in 2023 as the category continued to benefit from strong growth in domestic and inbound tourism flows and the thirst for travel and lodging that has emerged as consumers look to compensate for missing out during the many months that travel was off the table . One of the most important spurs on growth in the category during the year was the availability of holiday vouchers, which were issued to around three million Romanians during the year.
2023 saw robust positive growth in booking, with intermediaries recording positive performances in virtually all categories of booking. One factor that was instrumental in the positive performances recorded in booking during the year was the increasing interest in early booking reservations among the Romanian population.
With Government interest in supporting the development of Romania’s travel and tourism industry set to remain strong over the forecast period, increasing amounts of official support are set to create opportunities for growth across all categories of travel and tourism for the foreseeable future. Recent updates to the legislative framework for the travel and tourism industry has established eight destination management organisations (DMOs), which will include all relevant public and private entities operating in the tourism and culture sectors in any given area.
