Inbound tourism continues to lag behind the recovery of outbound tourism, partly due to the ongoing conflict in neighbouring Ukraine, but also a result of Slovakia’s limited promotion as an attractive destination. This may change with the establishment of the Ministry for Tourism, which aims to increase inbound tourism.
There has been a significant rise in the number of charter flights, leading to an increased market share for charter airlines. A notable milestone was achieved in 2023 with the first charter flight from Bratislava to destinations such as the Dominican Republic and Vietnam.
The recovery of the hotel industry has been hindered by the delayed rebound of inbound tourism. The winter season, in particular, has been impacted by climate change, as shorter and milder winters have led to fewer bookings for ski holidays.
Consumers are more budget-conscious when booking travel in 2024 compared to 2023, mainly due to lower savings caused by rising prices and inflation in 2023. The previous year still benefited from savings accumulated during the pandemic, but 2024 has seen a shift towards more cautious spending.
Digitalisation will continue to shape the travel sector in the coming years. On one side, tourists are increasingly using their smartphones to book trips, compare prices, and find information about the places they visit, such as museums, while also sharing reviews and experiences online.
