Travel in Switzerland continues to rise in 2024, with number of trips and value sales of inbound arrivals, domestic tourism and outbound departures all exceeding pre-pandemic, 2019 levels. Inbound is a major driver of growth, and international events in neighbouring countries such as the UEFA European football championship in Germany and the Olympic Games in France, are having a positive impact on interest in traveling to Switzerland in 2024.
Passenger numbers and total value sales in 2024 continue to increase, and the total value sales are also expected to surpass the pre-pandemic level. The cost of flying is expected to fall in Switzerland by the end of the year, driven by rising passenger demand intensifying the competition and forcing airlines to cut ticket prices.
Recovery in hotels in terms of value sales is still not complete in 2024, in part thanks to the lack of Chinese guests, meaning further potential for greater demand and price rises and thus growth in hotels during 2024. Although employment has now exceeded pre-pandemic and, after a long downward trend, even surpassed the level of ten years ago, the general shortage of skilled workers and the associated difficulty in filling apprenticeship positions will continue to pose major challenges for the hotel industry in the future and will remain a significant cost driver.
Despite rising living costs, Swiss travellers are still booking holidays of the same length as has been typical, and in 2024 are showing greater willingness to book more expensive options. Most opt for other European countries, with lower-income households more likely to holiday within Switzerland.
The outlook for the travel industry is cautiously optimistic. Although the post-pandemic surge in pent-up demand is largely over, travel remains an important need for the Swiss.
