Coffee is set to see low volume growth in both retail and foodservice in the US in the forecast period. With the cost-of-living crisis showing little signs of abating for most US consumers, and a supply chain that faces seemingly unceasing difficulties, consumers will look for ways to treat themselves in order to give themselves a boost.
With both demand for coffee and climate crisis showing no signs of abating, exceptional pressure remains on a crop that may see half its cultivated area gone in 25 years. While much theorising exists about improved methods and processes, a supply gap is inevitable, and meeting that need may prove more reactive than desired for producer and consumer.
A plateau was imminent for fresh ground coffee pods in the US prior to the pandemic, only truly bolstered by an increase in at-home consumption during stay-at-home orders. While Keurig Dr Pepper and Nestlé were able to capitalise on the number of machines in homes as a result, any continuing optimism about the category will have to reconcile with a cost-conscious populace increasingly focused on chilled and RTD options.
