Carbonates will face further financial challenges in the forecast period as volume and constant value sales are set to decline. Health and wellness trends and growing competition from other products, such as RTD tea, bottled water, and sports drinks, is set to limit the future potential in carbonates.
In line with health trends, there will be a growing focus on product launches offering reduced/no sugar carbonates, with this category expected to perform slightly better than regular carbonates. More natural/organic products and ingredients and those with added benefits are anticipated.
With Austrians being rather traditional in their shopping habits, grocery retailers will continue to account for the bulk of carbonates sales with a strong dominance of supermarkets. These grocery retailers remain unrivalled in terms of selection and often also pricing, frequently offering promotions and sales, as well as keeping up with new product launches and special editions.
