Although sales of carbonates are projected to see a return to growth over the forecast period in off- and on-trade volume terms, the tax on sugary soft drinks will continue to impact prices until 2025 when the increase reaches its maximum. For products with a content of between 6-10g of sugar the rate will be increased to COP38 per 100ml, while for products with 10g of sugar and above it will be increased to COP65.
Functional carbonates are still underdeveloped in Colombia and companies are exploring the category's potential. There has been an increasing interest in products with a high protein content in the country, but most of the launches have seen in dairy products.
Despite the rapid growth of the discounters channel, which consumers have increasingly turned to due to inflationary pressures in recent years, it is not expected that private label will see significant gains in carbonates over the forecast period. Traditional brands from Postobón, Fomento Económico Mexicano, and Ajecolombia will likely continue to maintain strong positions in carbonates, benefitting from consumer loyalty due to their long-standing presence in the country.
