Volume growth is expected for carbonates in Spain both off-trade and on-trade in the forecast period. Innovation during the next five years will continue to be led by reduced sugar carbonates, given that consumers are expected to continue to demand low calorie, low sugar products, which they perceive as healthier.
Whilst carbonates are attracting some consumers shifting from alcoholic drinks in a bid to live healthier lifestyles, there is also an ongoing shift by some consumers away from carbonates to other soft drinks categories in Spain. Given this, it is important to think of the different consumption occasions for carbonates.
In recent years, private label lines such as those from Carrefour and Mercadona have seen their shares of off-trade value sales increase in Spain. This is because some consumers traded down to buy lower-priced products amidst the high cost of living, and as prices rose as a result of inflation and higher costs of production.
