Although the offer of reduced sugar carbonates has increased significantly since tighter government regulations entered into force, consumption has not seen a notable shift from regular sweetened carbonates, with the latter still set to account for nearly 95% of overall off-trade volume sales in 2024. This shows that flavour is very important for consumers, but also that the perception of carbonates as a sweetened beverage is well accepted.
Consumers’ needs are expected to continue evolving along with their lifestyles, and manufacturers are likely to adapt, tailoring their product portfolios to consumers’ various consumption occasions and shopping preferences. Delivery services are expected to drive the growth of multipacks over the forecast period, while individual formats are likely to be preferred for immediate consumption, and preferably cold.
On-trade volume sales of carbonates are finally expected to surpass the pre-pandemic (2019) level in 2024, and they are projected to see further growth over the forecast period. This trend is likely to be driven by the expansion of on-trade outlets, especially chained restaurants.
