Demand for home care in Tanzania is rising, backed by an expanding middle class, urbanisation and increasing awareness about the various benefits of these products and the importance of good hygiene in the home. Nonetheless, volume growth slowed in 2023 due to inflationary pressures and price rises which pushed consumers towards smaller and cheaper packs.
Sales of home care continued to be negatively affected by inflationary pressures in 2023, with this being fuelled by elevated fuel and energy costs. Manufacturers and distributors were faced with high production and transportation costs which they were forced to pass on to the end consumer.
There has been a rise in use of multi-purpose cleaners and home care disinfectants for general floor cleaning due to the antibacterial and anti-germicidal properties of these products, with this trend having grown out of the pandemic. These products clean and disinfect floors at the same time instead of just cleaning them, as is the case with standard floor cleaners.
Tanzania’s population is growing rapidly increasing from 58 million inhabitants in 2018 to 67 million in 2023, with life expectancy at birth standing at 68 years.
Infrastructure improvements are becoming visible, especially in the commercial capital Dar Es Salaam. Roads are being expanded and maintained, leading to significant decongesting of industrial and port areas, which in turn are contributing to a more efficient distribution of FMCG.
Over the forecast period, home care sales are expected to be supported by population growth and the expansion of the country’s middle class whose access to consumer goods is rapidly developing, notably through the expansion of urban retail channels such as supermarkets.
