As inflation stabilises and once the economy starts to pick up this should boost consumer confidence and their willingness to spend on groceries. In this context, demand for premium products in grocery retailing is likely to increase.
Following Delhaize’s successful strategy that has enabled it to offer Sunday openings, Colruyt now plans to test Sunday openings for its supermarkets over the forecast period. Until 2024, none of the company’s supermarkets had opened on Sundays, aside from one experiment at a holiday location on the coast where the legislation is different and supermarkets?can be opened on Sundays without paying premiums to employees.
Over the forecast period, it is expected that consumers will become increasingly likely to do their grocery shopping online and this could limit the growth of store-based sales for supermarkets. This trend is likely to be driven by strong investment from leading players (eg Delhaize, Colruyt, Albert Heijn) in their foods e-commerce strategies, which includes providing wider coverage for home delivery, lower costs for home delivery, and offering more click-and-collect points.

Supermarkets are chained or independent retail outlets with a selling space of between 400 and 2,500 square metres and with a primary focus on selling food/beverages/tobacco and other groceries. Supermarkets may also sell a selection of non-groceries, but the product mix is skewed towards grocery items. Example brands include Casino, Kroger, and Tesco. Exception: In some markets, primarily the US, Australia and Hong Kong, there are grocery retailer brands that operate outlets with a selling space of over 2,500 square metres, but offer only a very limited range of non-grocery merchandise or none at all. These brands are included in Supermarkets.
