Low levels of consumer awareness act as a constraint on the potential development of a number of edible oils, including rapeseed oil and soy oil, and there is limited marketing activity on the part of existing players such as Lam Soon (M) Bhd and Socma Trading (M) Sdn Bhd to generate brand and product consciousness amongst consumers. As a result, products such as rapeseed oil and soy oil are expected to continue to receive low levels of attention from consumers during the forecast period.
Sime Darby Plantation Bhd launched Alif EcoPaX in 3kg (palm oil) with new sustainable packaging in plastic pouches (which are convenient for pouring with a plastic screw closure) in January 2023. This development showed that the company and the market are moving forward in an effort to target small households, as this newly launched product caters to four person households.
Established edible oils players, such as Lam Soon (M) Bhd, FFM Bhd and Sime Darby Plantation Bhd amongst others, are anticipated to expand distribution beyond supermarkets and hypermarkets to convenience stores and small local grocers with the development of smaller pack sizes, such as 1kg, 2kg and 3kg packs, in an effort to adapt to the shift towards smaller households. Smaller households often prefer smaller pack sizes to reduce the risk of waste and because of the convenience in terms of both transportation and storage, with smaller urban households, in particular, often having very limited space available to store grocery items.

Please note blended oil that contain over 50% of one type of oil are categorised in that category, e.g. blended oil with 60% soy oil is categorised in soy oil; whereas blended oils with less than 50% of a specific type of oil are categorised in other edible oil. Includes: Pre-packaged edible oils products purchased by consumers through legally established retail channels. Excludes: Unpackaged/bulk oils, i.e. instances where consumers bring an empty container or plastic bag to be (re)filled with cooking oil. Example: Minyak curah in Indonesia.
