With global shortages of cocoa predicted over the forecast period, due to factors such as poor harvest brought on by climate change, and also increased global demand for cocoa, Dominican cocoa will be prioritised for export. As such, there will continue to be shortages of chocolate-based flavoured powder drinks, especially in the short term.
There is likely to be an increase in imported brands to compensate for the shortage in locally produced chocolate-based flavoured powder drinks. This is already evident, with imported brands such as Swiss Miss, Mokate, Hershey´s, Ontario and Ovaltine now for sale in supermarkets, as the well as the private label brand Food Club brand, which is a private brand imported by Centro Cuesta Nacional and sold in its supermarket chains Nacional and Jumbo.
There is potential for growth of private label. In addition to Food Club, which was discussed above, Centro Cuesta Nacional also offers the Líder private label brand in chocolate-based flavoured powdered drinks.
