The plant-based dairy category in Bulgaria is expected to continue to grow both in current value and particularly in volume terms, thanks to the growing number of vegans in Bulgaria, as well as consumers on lactose-free diets, and those looking for healthy dairy alternatives. Although all subcategories will enjoy growth, plant-based milk will remain the most significant subcategory, and other plant-based milk will increase the fastest due to the penetration of more variants and brands across distribution channels, including those with normal ingredients such as walnuts, in addition to the most common rice, oats and almonds.
Plant-based yoghurt is expected to grow faster than it did during the review period in volume terms. Local producers such as Sofrino will extend their product portfolios with new flavours.
Plant-based cheese will also increase value and volume terms, albeit at a slower rate than seen during the review period, mainly due to its higher prices and considerable fat content, which tends to mitigate against the consumption of high quantities. As a result of this, a greater number of products with a creamy consistency are expected to emerge in the years ahead.
