Plant-based dairy products suffer from a higher VAT rate (full 20%) as opposed to traditional drinking milk products which are taxed lower at 10%. While this issue has been publicly discussed in 2023 and early 2024, no compromise was reached, and the newly elected Slovak government decided to take no action as it combats the high fiscal deficit.
In a cross-category trend, growing environmental concerns across Europe continue to inspire both consumers and manufacturers towards more eco-friendly products and methods of production. Ultimately, such developments focus on using less plastic in packaging and more efficient production (waste reduction, lowering greenhouse emissions, etc.
Plant-based dairy is also faring well in foodservice, as consumers are increasingly attracted to such options in both their food and drinks. For example, as seen with the rise of coffee made with different milks other than cow milk, in addition to meals per se.
