Consumers’ health consciousness and interest in nutrition have been growing, with this trend evident even before the pandemic. The onset of COVID-19 in Japan accelerated this trend, as people strived to limit the chances of contracting the virus, and were concerned about weight gain due to reduced physical activity during periods of working from home and home seclusion.
Despite the increasing sustainability trend globally, awareness of sustainability amongst Japanese consumers is still very low. According to Euromonitor International’s Lifestyles survey, fielded January to February 2024, although more than 60% of global consumers are trying to have a positive impact on the environment through their everyday actions, the figure is only 27% in Japan, which is lowest amongst all surveyed countries.
