The seasonality of tea consumption in Hungary is expected to be extended with more offerings of hitherto very niche cold-infused teas. The main competitor in this space is expected to be RTD tea, which is also gaining traction due to a perception that it offers a healthier alternative to carbonates, alongside a growing variety and the use of promotions from major players.
In retail volume terms, instant tea is expected to see ongoing decline, while “other” tea is not projected to post growth, and then only marginal-to-slight, until the second half of the forecast period. Consumer preferences are increasingly shifting towards natural and high-quality products, such as loose-leaf and filter teas, which are seen as healthier and more authentic compared to instant varieties.
To sustain the popularity of private label products in tea, it is crucial to continue offering well-known herbal and fruit varieties, as these are “staples” in the category in Hungary. As trends in health and wellness continue to develop and grow, alongside increasing consumer sophistication and the demand for unique and interesting products, private label retailers should consider expanding their range to include more speciality teas, such as green and herbal blends.
