At first sight, all seemed to be going rather well for hot drinks in France in 2023, at least in current value terms. Hot drinks remained one of the most dynamic markets in dry grocery products in supermarkets and hypermarkets.
A key issue within hot drinks in 2023 was inflation and the soaring costs of coffee, tea and their packaging, something that significantly boosted value growth but hampered volume recovery during the year. The global cost of coffee skyrocketed and thus retail volume sales continued to wane in most categories.
The competitive landscape for hot drinks remained highly concentrated in 2023, with only three players securing two thirds of the market value sales, Nestlé SA, JDE Peet's BV and Lavazza SpA. The former two were the main drivers, Nestlé growing its sharing to one third of total hot drinks value sales and Jacob Douwe Egberts holding nearly one quarter.
The drop in volume sales of hot drinks was mainly visible in retail due to a post-pandemic normalisation effect. More particularly, the bubble of e-commerce (online/click & collect) that was created by the COVID-19 crisis began to burst in 2022 and continued to wane in 2023.
The foodservice channel continued to do well in 2023 thanks to a positive post-COVID-19 effect and the recovery of domestic and inbound tourism. However, the strong volume growth of foodservice during the year was also partly deceptive, as this channel was still below its pre-pandemic level.
The hot drinks market in France is expected to see total volume sales fall over the forecast period due to the ongoing decline in retail volumes. Prior to and during the pandemic, hot drinks was one of the most dynamic shelf-stable grocery products thanks to consumers purchasing less from foodservice and consuming more at home.
