At home coffee grinders have become less expensive and smaller (and therefore less intrusive in the limited space typical of urban homes), which has led to more local consumers purchasing such products. This has spurred the development of the fresh coffee beans category in Israel.
Nespresso maintained a strong lead in coffee pods, whilst the Strauss Group continued to lead in the standard fresh ground coffee and instant coffee categories with the Elite brand, as well as remaining overall leader in coffee. Strauss Group was also the clear leader in other hot drinks as there is little competition in this category with smaller players unable to compete with the leader as they tend to only engage in limited marketing because they lack the financial resources.
There were no major retailing developments in 2023. There has been a small shift towards small local grocers, due to the growing convenience trend as busy consumers look to shop for products when they need them and close to home.
Foodservice has seen stronger growth in 2023 than was previously expected. The café market has recovered strongly during the year, despite the strong growth of premium at-home coffee consumption.
Further premiumisation is expected in the hot drinks market in Israel during the forecast period. This trend is set to be visible in both the tea and coffee categories.
