Bolivia has managed to protect itself to a large extent from inflation by continuing to have a fixed exchange rate against the dollar. However, there has been challenges for the economy in 2023, with sharp falls in foreign currency reserves and this has increased inflationary pressure slightly, particularly for imports, resulting in inflation higher than 2022.
There is significant local production in both coffee and tea and this ensures stability of prices to an extent. However, with inflation higher than in 2022, there is a degree of trading down.
Overall, Hansa Ltda continues to lead and is closely followed by Nestlé Bolivia Srl, with both players having a double-digit value share. Hansa holds a strong leading position in tea, with its offerings of local brands including Windsor and Ceylán and its imported brand Hindú.
Small local grocers continue to account for the vast majority of volume sales of hot drinks in Bolivia, with hypermarkets and supermarkets only gaining slight volume share over the review period. One reason for the continued strength of small local grocers is the widespread availability of contraband through these channels.
Unlike retail, foodservice is expected to register very healthy double-digit value growth in 2023. Coffee shop chains are also seeing continued growth, such as Juan Valdez Café, which specialises in Colombian coffee, with its stores mainly located in busy shopping centres.
Hot drinks will register moderate volume growth over the forecast period. supported by continuing population growth.
