Overall, retail volume sales for hot drinks are expected to fall marginally, due to a slight fall in volume sales for coffee, which is by far the most popular hot drink in Bosnia-Herzegovina. Continuing population decline dampens volume sales, as does continuing inflation, though price growth has eased.
Though overall coffee is expected to register a fall in volume sales, fresh ground coffee pods are expected to register current value and volume growth in 2023. Coffee pods have been on a high growth trajectory, with a significant number of coffee pod machines having been purchased in recent years and an increasing range of brands now available.
Grand Prom ad continues to lead hot drinks, thanks to its significant retail value share within coffee, and in particular within fresh ground coffee, which is the most popular coffee format in Bosnia-Herzegovina. Other coffee player, Vispak dd, ranks second, with its coffee brand Zlatna Dzezva, though it is significantly behind Grand Prom.
While traditional grocery retailers continue to account for a significant portion of value sales, modern grocery retailers continued to gain value share over the review period and this will continue over the forecast period. In addition, Lidl plans to open outlets in Bosnia-Herzegovina and is already constructing outlets and recruiting staff, with openings possible as soon as 2024.
Whereas retail channels are expected to register a decline in volume sales in 2023, foodservice channels are expected to see perform strongly, with increased volume sales. The sector has fully recovered from the pandemic, with volume sales having surpassed pre pandemic levels.
Hot drinks will register minimal volume growth over the forecast period, with population decline dampening volume growth. As in 2023, coffee will be the poorest performer, largely due to the high maturity of coffee, with tea and in particular chocolate-based flavoured powder drinks, faring better.
