Uganda is a major exporter of tea and coffee, with these being by far the most popular hot drinks in the country. Demand for other hot drinks remains confined to the affluent urban middle class.
Sales of hot drinks continued to see steady growth in retail and foodservice volume terms in 2024. Tea and coffee remain popular drinks in the country, especially tea, with consumption being boosted by urbanisation, the opening of new cafés and coffee shops and rising incomes.
Coffee exports rose in value and volume terms in 2024 compared to the previous year. The increase in value terms was in part due to the prevailing high global coffee prices.
There are local promotional events organised by the Uganda Coffee Development Authority with the aim of promoting domestic coffee consumption. These include local trade agricultural exhibitions where information on coffee trade, investment opportunities, coffee types, grades, and the benefits of drinking coffee.
Coffee in Uganda is generally exported as a raw material. The small holder farmers sell to cooperatives/intermediaries who then sell to processors who sell to exporters.
The EU passed the European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) law which means that all commodities including coffee, among others, cannot be placed on the shelf if they were produced on land that was deforested after December 2020. This means that producers must provide information including coordinates of where the produce is coming from.
